In this ongoing series, Cape Town’s Worldart Gallery celebrates the influence of the fairground environment on Pop Art. Typical elements, such as the distinctive use of typography and the bold application of colour, were appropriated by Pop artists in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Flattened pictorial images were often subdivided into smaller pictures, creating a total image of duplicity. Together with images of targets and other typical features of the vibrant fairground scene, these elements eventually became the hallmark of the visual language of Pop Art.

Worldart will be showing how contemporary artists pay tribute to their forerunners by revisiting both the fairground and the Pop Art genre in a series of exciting new works.
