NOT A PRETTY PICTURE BY DION CUPIDO

The third solo exhibition with exciting Cape Town artist Dion Cupido is to take place at Worldart gallery 6 to 27 February. The show is titled Not a pretty picture.

Cupido, recently recognised as one of three “Bright Young Things” by the Art South Africa magazine, has become known for his edgy street art influenced portraits. While his paintings often deal with those on the outside, this exhibition is about his intimate memories as a young boy growing up in the often troubled suburb of Mitchells Plain.

“As an 11 year old, I got to know a short cut from school. The hill path led me through a densely grown area where I would find peace and tranquillity – a fairy-tale world where I lost myself for hours. It was the same spot where the dreaded “Station Strangler” buried and hid his victims. Only now, many years later, do I recognise the ominous undertones in the place that represented so much peace and happiness for me,” says Cupido.

The exhibition opens at Worldart, 54 Church Street, Cape Town, on Thursday 6 February and closes on 27 February 2014.
