NEW EXHIBITION BY KILMANY-JO LIVERSAGE

After two years of focusing on international projects including the 2013 Venice Biennale, Kilmany-Jo Liversage is back on home soil with a double solo exhibition.

The body of paintings, titled Obversa714, will be seen in two cities simultaneously. The Cape Town exhibition is hosted at Worldart gallery and the Johannesburg exhibition at Lizamore & Associates. Both will run from 5 July to 5 August 2014.

Kilmany-Jo is known for her work in a relatively new genre called Urban Art that is recognised as an art form inspired by street aesthetics, most notably spray painted graffiti and stenciling. Yet her rare and desired style combines street art and fine art, resulting in exceptional portraits that are both classic and distinctly urban.

“During the Machine Age, artists would reduce their compositions to its smallest constituent parts. With the paintings in Obversa714, I manufactured this deconstruction by combining the painting tradition of portraiture with idiosyncrasies from the urban culture of tagging. This enabled me to explore the intersection between street art and fine art while reconstructing them into a new genre of portraiture,” says Liversage.

The Cape Town exhibition opens at Worldart, 54 Church Street, Cape Town, on Thursday 3 July (First Thursdays night in the Cape Town cbd) and concludes on 5 August 2014.
Gallery hours: Monday to Fridays 10h00 – 17h00 and Saturdays from 10h00 – 13h00. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.

The Johannesburg exhibition opens on Saturday 5 July at Lizamore & Associates, 155 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, and concludes on 5 August 2014. Gallery hours: Tuesday to Fridays 10h00 – 17h30 and Saturdays from 10h00 – 15h30.
Closed on Sundays and public holidays.
