TR!PT3CH BY CLAUDE CHANDLER 5-26 OCTOBER 2017

A solo exhibition at WORLDART (54 Church Street, Cape Town) from 5-26 October 2017.

Following his recent residency in Europe, Claude Chandler returns to South Africa for his latest solo exhibition. Tr!pt3ch presents a series of two large scale acrylic on canvas  triptychs – ‘Binary Saints’ and ‘CTRL ALT DEL’.  The titles refer to his interest in the digital world and its effect on human philosophy and psychology.

Inspired by his visit to a cathedral in Belgium, where he encountered the towering altarpiece Adoration of the mystic lamb by Van Eyck, Chandler combined his interest in its religious and spiritual aspects to create works that to tell contemporary tale of ‘Sainthood’ as projected on digital platforms.

His technique is the repetitive use of numerical stamps to create form and structure. The numerals ‘1’ and ‘0’ are used to echo their role in binary code. The chosen series of numerals ‘010100110101010000101110’ translate to the word ‘Saint’.

‘I have ‘digitized’ them by painting them only with binary code stamps, a metaphor for when we upload an image of ourselves online, where this abstract version of the self is often viewed as more important than that of the physical self, similar to that of sainthood.’

Tr!pt3ch opens on First Thursdays 5 October at 6pm and will run until 26 October.
