PRELUDE: A SOLO EXHIBITION BY MARY VISSER 5-26 JULY 2018

WORLDART is pleased to present a new solo exhibition by Mary Visser, a South African artist who paints abstracted landscapes. Titled Prelude the exhibition showcases Visser’s new body of works, reflecting on her interest in city spaces, objects and signs.

Visser’s creative process consists of her taking long drives and walks through the city, where she sketches and takes notes. She then reworks all of this into abstract collages. The artworks are an exploration of the everyday mundane, which Visser transforms into contemplative paintings. The paintings are process works; each of Mary’s paintings are a conversation between marks; a kind of story-telling that exposes the mistakes that are part of the art making process.

Mary explains: ‘I am in love with the process of making paintings. The sensuous delight of colour and mark thrills me. I’m on the hunt as I engage with the surface for those little moments of exhilaration’.

Visser was born in 1971 and graduated in 1992 with a BFA from Rhodes University, Grahamstown. In 2013 she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Art, with distinction, at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. She lives and works in Cape Town.

Prelude opens on Cape Town’s popular art night First Thursdays 5 July and will run until 26 July 2018.
