IF THERE IS SOMETHING BY BASTIAAN VAN STENIS

A solo exhibition of new paintings at WORLDART (54 Church Street, Cape Town) from 2-30 November 2017.

Bastiaan van Stenis believes that most of us wear masks and that we live in a world where we feel the need to conceal things about ourselves. The title of the exhibition, If there is Something, refers not only to his curiosity but also questions perceptions about our sense of reality.

“I have used portraiture, elements of nature and found objects to create scenes that resemble a state of comfort and this allowed me to observe my perceptions more closely” he says.

His work combines abstraction and surrealism and he uses paint, glue, cloth and other materials to create expressionistic paintings.

Van Stenis (36), who has been a full-time artist since 2000, works from his studio on a farm near Stanford in the Western Cape. Though he has pursued a low-key approach to marketing his work, he has built up loyal following through selected exhibitions in South Africa and abroad.

This solo exhibition will be the first with a high-profile gallery in South Africa.

If there is Something opens on Cape Town’s popular First Thursdays evening on 2 November at 6pm and will run until 30 November.
